The Association of Trauma Healing Facilitators (ASHEFF) has called for increased support for trauma victims. ASHEFF National President, Samuel Pender, who spoke at its yearly Trauma Community Awareness Programme (ATCAP) and conference, tagged: ‘Healing Heroes Trauma Care for Everyday Champion,’ held in Lagos, said trauma is a major issue in Nigeria, with many people suffering in silence.

“Trauma is a silent killer, and it’s affecting many people in our society. We need to create more awareness about trauma and provide support for those who are affected,” he said.

The conference brought together experts in trauma management, and victims of trauma, to share their experiences, as well as discuss ways to address the issue.

Pender emphasised the need for increased support for trauma victims, including counselling, therapy, and other forms of assistance. “We need to create a safe space for people to share their experiences and receive support,” he said.

Director of the Domestic Violence Unit at the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Olorunfemi Oluwatoyin, stated that trauma affects not only the individual but also their spiritual, social, and financial life.

According to her, a stable mind is necessary for personal growth and development, adding that it is important for individuals to heal from past traumas and be equipped to help others.

She urged men to speak out about their experiences with trauma, saying they often suffer in silence. Oluwatoyin noted that the notion that men have a “shock absorber” and don’t cry is a myth and that men need to be encouraged to seek help and healing.

The conference also featured a graduation ceremony for students who completed ASHEFF’s trauma management training programme, an online course designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to manage trauma and help others.
