Rwanda defeat haunts Eagles as Nigeria drops in FIFA ranking

Nigeria suffered a steep drop in the latest FIFA rankings released yesterday, by the world football ruling body, which many have attributed to the Super Eagles’ 1-2 home loss to Rwanda, in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo.

According to FIFA, the Super Eagles, who were ranked number 36 in the world in October, are now the 44th-best team, falling by eight points. The drop, however, did not affect Nigeria’s standing in Africa, where they remain the continent’s fifth-best team behind Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, and Algeria.

The world’s top five teams are unchanged with Argentina topping the list, followed by France, Spain, England, and Brazil although Argentina’s lead over France and Spain was reduced. Portugal and The Netherlands each moved up one spot to number six and seven, respectively, with Belgium dropping to number eight. Italy remained unchanged at number nine with Germany rising one place to enter the top 10.
Uruguay rose three rungs to number 11, while Colombia fell two places to number 12.
