State governments slammed for stifling LG autonomy

Renowned academic and quality assurance expert, Prof. Yomi Akindele-Oscar, has criticised the persistent interference of state governments in local government autonomy.

Speaking at the 2024 annual retreat of the Association of Ex-Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria (ASELGON), Akindele-Oscar highlighted challenges faced by local governments due to state overreach.

He stated, “State governments often withhold federal allocations meant for local governments or release them in small tranches, hindering development projects.”

He also stressed the importance of capacity building and public participation to improve local governance.

Former lawmaker Hon. Adekoya Adesegun expressed concerns over the politicisation of local governments, which he said has caused a decline in governance and accountability.

He called for stronger leadership and financial independence for local governments.

The recent Supreme Court judgment granting local governments more financial autonomy was described as a significant step forward.

However, experts warned that state governments might still find ways to undermine the ruling.

The retreat commended the Lagos State Government for its commitment to local government autonomy, presenting it as a model for other states.

Several individuals and organizations were honored for their contributions to grassroots development.

ASELGON National President, Hon. Albert Asipa, reaffirmed the association’s support for the Supreme Court judgment and urged state governments to fully implement the ruling.

“By empowering local governments, Nigeria can achieve greater economic development, social justice, and political stability,” he stated.
