The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lagos State, has planned a two-week sensitisation programme on securing consciousness against get-rich-quick syndrome.

The agency’s State Director, Dr Mustafa Tukur, who spoke during a media briefing at Dopemu, Lagos, said the programme aimed at promoting hard work, self-belief, and the dignity of labour among Nigerians, particularly the youth.

He said that the upcoming series of programmes would run through this week and next at the state and local council levels.

“These programmes are designed to educate Nigerians on the dangers of illicit activities, particularly the growing trend of cybercrime and the ‘get-rich-quick syndrome’ that has become rampant among young people,” he said.

“We want to ensure that Nigerians, especially the youth, understand the negative implications of engaging in illegal activities. The message we are sending is simple: believe in your hard work and believe in yourselves,” he added.

He noted the importance of these values as part of the country’s core principles, which aim to build a more prosperous and self-reliant society.

“The initiative will feature extensive media engagement and collaboration with various stakeholders, including traditional leaders, community gatekeepers, and educational institutions. Schools at all levels, from primary to tertiary, will be involved in spreading this message, with NOA personnel reaching out to both students and parents in a bid to raise awareness and drive change,” he added.

Tukur said that many youths had been lured into cybercrime and fraud due to peer pressure and the desire for quick wealth.

“Our mission is not just to talk to the youth but to also engage the wider community. Parents, community leaders, and traditional institutions must all be part of this campaign. Only through collective action can we tackle these societal challenges effectively,” he said.

He, therefore, stressed that it is crucial for Nigerians to believe in hard work as a path to success and to reject the allure of shortcuts that undermine their futures.
