University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED)

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo State, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, has disclosed that within the 10 years of its establishment, UNIMED had been able to break barriers and also achieved an unprecedented feat in the training of health professionals in the country.

According to Fatusi, the institution, as the first specialised medical and health sciences university in the country, had been able to train three sets of medical doctors, as well as four sets of nurses, compared to other higher institutions that had been unable to complete their programmes in record time.

The vice-chancellor, who spoke during a media briefing to herald the 10th-year anniversary celebration of the institution, said that graduates of UNIMED now constitute 90 per cent of the workforce in hospitals across the state.

The university don emphasised that the institution is not only focused on producing professionals but also poised to address critical healthcare needs in communities.

Fatusi, while maintaining that the university’s Faculty of Medical Rehabilitation is the first in Nigeria and West Africa with five programmes, which include speech therapy and audiology, said that the university ventured into it given the growing demand for rehabilitation services for children with disabilities and the elderly.

The VC, who explained that the celebration of the 10th-year anniversary of the institution is not a jamboree, stressed that it was designed to further project the institution to the public on its strides and accomplishments.
