Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has been named the first-ever ‘African of the Decade’ by the All African Business Leaders Awards (AABLA).

The award was presented to him on Saturday at the Africa Investment Forum (AIF) in Rabat, Morocco.
Adesina was recognised for his impactful 10-year tenure at the AfDB, which is set to conclude next year. His leadership and initiatives, particularly the bank’s ‘High 5’ strategic agenda, were central to the accolade. These initiatives aim to light up and power Africa, feed the continent, industrialise it, integrate it, and improve the lives of its people.

In his acceptance speech, Adesina expressed gratitude to Rakesh Wahi, the Chairman of the ABN Group, and the management of AABLA for the honour. He highlighted his pride in being African, saying, “God did not make a mistake when he made me an African. I will leave as an African and I will do all I can, to my final breath, for Africa.”

Adesina shared a personal sentiment, adding, “When I die and it’s time for resurrection, I will ask God for permission to come out with an African flag.”

He stressed that such awards are not only a recognition of individual achievements but also a tribute to the many supporters and believers who contribute to the success of a vision.

The award further inspires Adesina to remain dedicated to his mission of improving the African continent, motivating him to continue his work with passion and resolve.
