Prison good, reformed me, Farouk Lawan recounts
After seven years jail term, former member of the House of Representatives, Farouk Lawan, has described his imprisonment as transformative and life-challenging.
Besides, the ex-chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation Committee had asserted, “Having regained freedom today, I am a better person, and I thank God for everything.”
The lawmaker was later found guilty and sentenced for a “$500,000 bribe to suppress criminal act on fuel subsidy.”
Addressing his Shannon/Bagwai Federal Constituency residents during a visit at the weekend, Lawan explained that he was back home not just for political calling, but also to pay condolences and homage to traditional rulers and sympathise with sick families.
He tagged himself as a “freelancer in politics, and I don’t belong to anybody.”
The politician was received by Alhaji Nura Shehu Ahmad, the District Head of Bagwai and Magajin Rafi of Kano, who described Lawan’s incarceration as “a blessing in disguise” for both him and his supporters.
His words: “Today, many of us here who were once your enemies have turned into not only your supporters, but your loyal supporters, with a deep understanding of who Faruk Lawan truly is, and his passion for his people.”
In Shanono Local Council, the legislator got a similar commendation from the District Head, Ibrahim Sani Gaya Uban Doman Kano, who encouraged him to view his experience as a test of faith.
Lawan’s visit was marked by a show of solidarity, as he was accompanied by Shanono and Bagwai council chairmen, Alhaji Habu Barau, and Alhaji Bello Abdullahi Kiyawa, alongside Kano political appointees, NNPP leaders, and supporters across political divides, including the APC and PDP.
