Obaseki rewards Edo Queens with N10 million
The immediate past Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, and his wife, Betsy, have given N10 million reward to the players and technical crew of Edo Queens for their nomination as CAF Women’s Club of the Year.
In a statement by the Media Adviser to the former governor, Crusoe Osagie, Obaseki said Edo Queens have not only conquered Nigeria as the reigning champions of the Nigerian Women’s Football League (NWFL) but have also made their mark on the continental stage with their nomination as CAF Women’s Club of the Year.
He attributed the team’s accomplishments to the impact of the investments and reforms implemented in the sports sector by his administration between 2016 and 2024, particularly in promoting grassroots sports development, creating opportunities, and harnessing the sporting potential of women and youth in the state.
He pointed out that through numerous initiatives, including the Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament (BOWFT), Nigeria’s foremost pre-season women’s football tournament, the state was able to harness local talent, provide a platform for young women to showcase their skills, and nurture them into becoming world-class players.
He said the efforts were instrumental in building a strong foundation “for the success we are celebrating today, and we are proud of the team for being a good reflection of the progress made in sports development in the past eight years.”
