CIoD charter status to strengthen governance structure

The Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) Nigeria said that the governance changes will position the institute to transition from the old governance structure to a new era.

The institute added that the new structure is also aimed at strengthening the institute’s governance structure and positioning it for excellence in leading corporate governance practices in the years ahead.

President and Chairman of Governing Council, CIoD, Tijjani Borodo, said this at this year’s directors’ dinner and awards, stating that the transition is in three key areas that comprise dissolution of the executive committee, transformation of policy committees into sectoral groups, and the reconstitution of the governing council.

He said this year’s dinner and awards were spectacularly unique as it was an occasion that was used to present appreciation awards to many of its leaders who have served the institute meritoriously over the years.

In the category, he said there are seven past presidents and 16 executive committee chairmen of the institute who would be stepping down as members of the governing council and executive committee, respectively, because of the reconstitution of the governing council, as well as the dissolution of the executive committee in compliance with the institute’s new Charter Act.

Speaking on the theme ‘Celebrating Resilience, Excellence, and Leadership’, Borodo said the occasion was about celebrating achievers and recognising invaluable contributions of individuals and organisations that have modelled ethical leadership and a high standard of corporate governance practices.

According to him, “We are celebrating an impressive lineup of award recipients who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, vision, and commitment to excellence. As we bid farewell to our past presidents and outgoing committee chairmen, we also welcome our new leaders who will take the reins and steer our institute toward the next level of success in its mission and vision.

I do not doubt that they will build on the foundations laid by their predecessors and take our institute to even greater heights.”

The CIoD chief highlighted the impact of various leadership over the years since its inception, stating that one of the reasons for the institute’s positioning in the business community was its leadership.

The event witnessed the presentation of corporate, good governance and leadership awards to individuals and corporate.
