Abia awards contract to reconstruct Omenuko Bridge in Ozuabam
The Abia Government has awarded a contract for the reconstruction of Omenuko Bridge located at Ozuabam in Arochukwu Local Government Area of the state.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mr. Okey Kanu, made this known on Monday during a press briefing on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting held in Umuahia.
Kanu said that the bridge, which had been in a state of disrepair, served as a link between Abia North and Abia Central Senatorial Zones of the state.
He described the bridge as significant not only for its infrastructural value but also for its historical and cultural importance.

Kanu said:”This is a bridge that forms the center piece of the First Igbo Novel ‘Omenuko’.
“This is a bridge that links up Abia North and Abia Central and for decades a lot of politicians have taken undue advantage of the rickety nature of that bridge to make campaign promises that were never fulfilled.
“The bridge is like the cleaved hand each time you are driving past the bridge before now you will be scared to your bones.”
He said that the reconstruction of the bridge would enhance connectivity, boost local economic activities, and serve as a vital link for residents and travelers in the area.

Kanu said that the present administration’s decision to rehabilitate the bridge was informed by its desire to improve critical infrastructure for the benefit of the citizens.
“The reconstruction of the bridge will actually promote connectivity in terms of movement of people and farm produce around that and repairing that bridge would do so much for people in that area.

“So it is an important project for the state government and very soon the flag off of that project will be announced.
“Once that bridge is fully reconstructed, it will not form the further for anybody who wants to use it for campaign in the future,”he said
