Yuletide: FRSC, Police to dismantle checkpoints on old Niger bridge

To facilitate traffic flow, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Police have agreed to dismantle all police checkpoints on the Delta side of the Old Niger Bridge from December 18, 2024 to January 10, 2025.

FRSC, Public Education Officer Olusegun Ogungbemide, who disclosed this yesterday in Abuja, said the agreement was reached following a critical session by the Sector Commander, Anambra State, Corps Commander Joyce Nnennaya Alexander, and the Anambra State Police Commissioner, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam as well as his counterpart in Delta State, B.S Oluwafemi.

According to Ogungbemide, the move was another proactive approach towards extenuating gridlock on the two Niger bridges linking Onitsha and Asaba major corridor, by joining forces with the Anambra and Delta states Commands of the Nigeria Police Force.

“Part of the interventions include removal of all checkpoints at the Head Bridge from December 18, 2024 to January 10, 2025, the establishment of mobile surveillance at the Second Bridge axis, and the dismantling of all police checkpoints on the Delta side of the old Niger Bridge,” he said.

These, he said, is to facilitate free traffic flow, as well as adequate deployment of officers for joint traffic control on the two bridges during the yuletide season.

According to him, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed has applauded the Sector Commander for the synergy, stating that the collaboration will strengthen the resolve of the Corps towards achieving safety and ease of movement for all road users on the Niger bridges during the festive period.

He called on the motoring public to give adequate cooperation to road traffic management personnel and comply with all traffic rules and regulations.
