IGP denies telling Nigerians to attack police on ‘stop and search’ duty

IGP Kayode Egbetokun

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has denied claims that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, instructed Nigerians to assault policemen who engage in stop and search on their phones.

Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi disclosed this in a statement.

A media report claimed that the IGP had given the go-ahead and ensured that any police groups who engage in stop and search be petted with stones.

However, Adejobi described the claim as fake news and appealed to Nigerians to report instances of police misconduct through appropriate channels.

He said the IGP had not issued such a directive encouraging violence against law enforcement officers, adding that such an approach underscores the importance of accountability and maintaining the rule of law, rather than resorting to violent actions.

“Members of the public are advised to remain vigilant against misinformation and verify information through credible sources,” he said.

He urged the public to contact the police on +2347056792065, +2349133333785, +2349133333786, and via social media accounts.

“Citizens can also contact us by mail through; [email protected] and reach us through the police website at http://npf.gov.ng,” he said.
