Oyo Safe City Pilot Project: A leap towards security and innovation in Oyo State

In a bold step to redefine public safety and urban security, the Oyo State Government has launched the Safe City Pilot Project, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at ensuring a secure and serene environment for residents of Ibadan, the state’s capital. Under the visionary leadership of Governor Abiola Ajimobi, this collaborative initiative between the Management Information Centre at the Governor’s Office and the Office of the Special Adviser on Security is making strides toward tackling security challenges in key hotspots across the city.

At the helm of this transformative project is Mr. Adedamola Ariyo, the Project Team Lead, whose technical expertise and strategic leadership have been instrumental in the project’s implementation. “The Oyo Safe City Pilot Project is not just about deploying technology; it is about leveraging innovation to enhance safety and improve the quality of life for residents. We’re setting a precedent for other states to follow,” Mr. Ariyo remarked during an interview.

The Safe City Project is designed to prevent crime and bolster public safety by utilizing real-time information sharing with the Joint Task Force, which includes police, army, and civil defense officers. Through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), the system identifies abnormalities and discrepancies in crowd behavior, providing timely alerts to enable proactive interventions. “Our use of AI allows us to stay one step ahead, ensuring swift responses to potential security breaches,” Mr. Ariyo explained.

As part of the pilot phase, 46 high-definition surveillance cameras were installed across strategic locations in Ibadan. These cameras provide comprehensive coverage of key areas and act as a deterrent to criminal activities. The live feeds are transmitted to a central situation room, where trained personnel monitor and analyze the data in real-time. This has significantly boosted the efficiency of the task force.

The project’s success lies in its robust infrastructure, meticulously designed by Mr. Ariyo and his team. This included determining the hardware, software, communication channels, and network requirements essential for the project’s functionality. The procurement process, another critical element, was overseen by Mr. Ariyo, who evaluated proposals from multiple vendors before selecting Huawei Technologies Nigeria Limited as the technical partner. The collaboration with MTN Nigeria Limited for internet connectivity ensured reliable and seamless data transfer using fiber optics and microwave technology. “This project is a testament to the power of collaboration. From Huawei providing cutting-edge equipment to MTN enabling seamless connectivity, every stakeholder has played a vital role in making this initiative a reality,” said Mr. Ariyo.

The Safe City Project is more than just a security measure; it reflects the Oyo State Government’s commitment to adopting smart city solutions to modernize urban management. The initiative not only addresses immediate safety concerns but also lays the groundwork for a sustainable and technology-driven urban future. “Our vision is to create a state where technology works for the people, fostering trust, security, and development,” Mr. Ariyo emphasized. Moreover, the project has spurred economic opportunities, including job creation for local contractors and training programs for personnel to operate and maintain the systems. By equipping residents with new skills, the project is fostering economic empowerment alongside its primary safety objectives.

As the pilot phase demonstrates promising results, there are plans to expand the project across Oyo State and replicate the model in other parts of Nigeria. With its strategic approach and technological innovation, the Safe City Project has the potential to become a template for tackling urban safety challenges nationwide.

Mr. Ariyo remains optimistic about the project’s broader impact, stating, “This is just the beginning. We are proving that with the right vision and technology, we can address Nigeria’s security challenges and transform our cities into safe and thriving hubs.” The Oyo Safe City Pilot Project exemplifies the positive strides being made under Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s administration. It reflects a government dedicated to progress, innovation, and the well-being of its people. With technical experts like Mr. Adedamola Ariyo steering transformative initiatives, Oyo State is fast becoming a beacon of safety, innovation, and development in Nigeria. As residents of Ibadan embrace this change, the project signals a brighter, safer, and more prosperous future for the state and sets a high standard for other regions to emulate.
