Former presidential candidate for the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has reiterated the importance of education and healthcare as fundamental pillars for Nigeria’s development.

Speaking during a visit to a Nigerian citizen who is receiving treatment at a hospital in Abuja, Obi emphasised the need for compassion and support for vulnerable Nigerians.

Obi stressed that a nation’s progress hinges on prioritising the well-being and education of its people.

“A society cannot thrive without lifting its citizens out of poverty and ensuring their health and education. These are the cornerstones of true development,” he said.

He also spoke about Nigerians battling health challenges, Obi urged citizens to extend kindness during the festive season.

“Even the smallest gestures—prayers, kind words, visits, or tangible support—can profoundly impact lives,” he said.

The Guardian reported that Obi criticised the recent directive of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) restricting the distribution of palliatives in Nigeria after a series of stampedes claimed the lives of over 60 Nigerians.

“Rather than imposing unnecessary bureaucracy, we should focus on fostering better coordination and encouraging Nigerians to assist their fellow citizens in organised, safe ways he said.

He called on Nigerians to use the festive season as an opportunity to embody care and compassion, envisioning a future where a healthy and educated population drives national prosperity.

“A new, healthy Nigeria is possible,” Obi concluded
