United Way Greater Nigeria (UWGN), in partnership with Shekel Mobility have successfully executed a Food Drive Initiative in Ijagemo Community, Lagos. The initiative provided essential support to 100 vulnerable households, including the elderly, widows, pregnant women, and individuals with disabilities and children.

Through the initiative, they distributed staple food items, hygiene packs, and supplements aimed at sustaining households for 6–12 weeks and raising awareness of the larger food security challenges facing Nigeria.

In addition, 200 children in the community received books and educational materials donated by Lantern Books, reinforcing the initiative’s commitment to immediate relief and long-term empowerment through education.

CEO Shekel Mobility, Sanmi Olukanmi, who reflected on his connection to Ijagemo, emphasised the importance of giving back to the community, particularly in the area where he grew up as a child.

He also encouraged parents to prioritise their children’s education, stating that it is a key factor in elevating their socioeconomic status in the future.

“This is my way of giving back to a community that nurtured me for over 16 years, and it holds a special emotional significance for me. I have a strong affinity for this place, and this initiative represents my commitment to supporting it,” he stated.

Speaking on the initiative’s impact, Executive Director of United Way Greater Nigeria, Deola Durodola, emphasised the importance of community-driven efforts in addressing food insecurity.

“We are incredibly proud to have been able to support more vulnerable households in the Ijagemo community.”

“By providing essential food items, hygiene packs, and educational materials, we have made a significant impact on their lives, especially during this festive season.”

She also urged more Corporate organisations and individuals to join hands and support UWGN in combating food insecurity in the country. In addition to providing immediate food relief, The Food Drive Initiative highlights the power of collaboration and compassion in addressing critical needs while fostering long-term community development by engaging with local communities.

The event, not only provided immediate relief but also fostered a deeper understanding of how sustainable solutions can be built to tackle hunger at its roots.
