The Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS) has pledged to collaborate with the Anambra State government to rid the state’s forests of unknown gunmen and other criminal elements.
The service vowed to comb Anambra’s forests, targeting camps and hideouts of killers and kidnappers.
NFSS Anambra Commander, Destiny Jonas, stated this in Abuja on Thursday, citing the recent abduction of an Anglican clergy, the killing of a Catholic priest, and the brutal murder of eight people in the Ihiala area of the state on December 30, 2024.
Jonas stressed the need for synergy between the NFSS and the state government to combat these heinous crimes, offering the service’s expertise in forest operations.
“NFSS is ready to support Operation Udo Ga Di Na Anambra and collaborate with other security agencies to secure the hinterlands,” Jonas said.
He stressed the importance of government recognition and dialogue to facilitate their efforts in reclaiming forests from criminal control.
Jonas expressed concerns over investors fleeing Anambra due to insecurity but noted that NFSS personnel assisted other security agencies to ensure a relatively peaceful festive season.
He revealed that the service had identified flashpoint bushes across the state and would launch operations in January 2025, pending government approval.
The commander noted past successes, including rescuing kidnapped victims during the yuletide and ensuring security in remote areas like Achala, Igbariam, and Nsugbe.
Jonas commended Deputy Commander-General of NFSS, Dr. John Metchie, for his unwavering support and the Commander-General, Dr. Joshua Osatimehin, for fostering unity in the service.
He reiterated NFSS’s commitment to making Anambra’s forests free from criminal activities, including deforestation, kidnappings, and other crimes.
