Two Almajiri students were killed, and two others injured, following an explosion at an Islamiyyah school in Kuchibiyu Community, Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), yesterday.
A public health practitioner in charge of the local health facility said one of the victims had an object, suspected to be an improvised explosive device (IED), wrapped in cloth.
The explosion occurred while the boy was unwrapping the substance during a discussion with three friends, killing him instantly and injuring the others. The practitioner disclosed that one of the injured later died at Kubwa General Hospital, while the other two are currently receiving treatment. Emergency responders, including police bomb disposal experts, soldiers, and Civil Defence personnel, have since secured the scene.
The health official confirmed that calm had been restored to the community, which was peaceful prior to the incident. He, however, could not confirm whether the explosion was the result of a suicide bombing.
Efforts to obtain an official statement from the police proved abortive, as the officer in charge of the Kubwa Police Command was unsuccessful.
