The University of Medical Sciences, Ondo State (UNIMED), has trained its members of staff on self-leadership and organizational productivity in order to foster a supportive and conducive academic environment.

With the maiden edition of the Registry’s in-house seminar held at the Laje campus of the institution, an associate professor of political science and international relations and CEO of Upward BAO Consulting, UK, Tunde Oseni stressed that communication, emotional intelligence, and other factors are critical to self-leadership skills.

Oseni, who was the facilitator of the training, spoke on the theme ‘Self-Leadership and Organizational Productivity in University Setting’ and stated that strategies such as responsiveness, innovation, and adaptability will enhance self-leadership, which ultimately contributes to organizational productivity.

According to him, “Self-leaders are collaborators and not competitors, and self-leaders are contributors and not free riders. The organization is the extension of the self. Self-development is the basis of self-leadership.”

On his part, the Registrar of the University, Mr. Ezekiel Adeniran, who explained the motive of the seminar, emphasized that “the leadership of the Registry is committed to making the Registry a globally acknowledged leading Registry that exemplifies excellence and innovation, fosters a supportive/conducive academic environment, and empowers students/staff to succeed.”

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, commended the initiative and explained why his administration believes in the constant training of staff at the University.

“This is a commendable initiative. It is the way to go, especially for members of staff of the Registry, who are the backbone of the University. Universities cannot afford to have registry staff who are intellectually weak. So, the capacities of staff in the Registry must be constantly developed through up-to-date knowledge.”

Similarly, the staff of the Bursary Department, Audit Unit, and Procurement Unit of the institution were trained on the use of Admon Accounting Software.

The training, facilitated by BISM Software Limited, according to the Public Relations Officer of the University, Isaac Oluyi, was one of the strategic plans of the Adesegun Fatusi-led Management to expose staff of the institution to global best practices in their respective fields.

The Bursar of the University, Shittu, expressed his gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor for his support, particularly in the area of human capacity development.

“The Vice-Chancellor has remained consistent in building the capacities of staff from the first day of his administration. He has demonstrated through his actions that knowledge of what one does will distinguish one and set one apart in the discharge of one’s duties.

“Admon Accounting Software is used to capture accounting information and to prepare financial statements for the University. BISM Software Limited is the developer of the software, and the software is being used by most universities in the Southwest.”
