It’s no gain saying, Nigeria’s creative industry – Film (Nollywood) and Music – has been making waves globally with its unique storytelling, cultural richness, and innovative production styles.
As a visionary thinker and creative who plays big in the industry, Afolabi Ladipo, widely known as Afolabi Silver is one of the individuals shaping the industry through his filmmaking and music productions skills, as well as his talent scouting ability.
With a degree in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management from Lagos State University, the Chief Executive Officer of Silver Light Integrated Media (SLIM) and its subsidiaries has played a crucial role in elevating storytelling standards in Nollywood. He blends his academic knowledge with a deep understanding of media production, creating films and television content that captivate audiences worldwide.
According to him, his journey into filmmaking was inspired by a diverse range of movies from childhood. He recalls being fascinated by the vibrant energy of Indian musicals, the breathtaking action of Chinese cinema, and the grand spectacles of Hollywood blockbusters.
Afolabi noted that it was The Matrix that truly ignited his passion for storytelling with its groundbreaking visuals and philosophical depth. He added that on the local front, it was the Nigerian drama Behind the Clouds, featuring Richard Mofe-Damijo, that made him realise the power of television in connecting deeply with audiences.
Sharing his perspectives on Nollywood trends, challenges, and the opportunities that will shape the industry’s trajectory, the filmmaker cum music producer told The Guardian that the movie, The Pursuit of Happyness remains his favourite film for its moving portrayal of resilience and human determination.
Afolabi’s contributions to Nollywood are substantial and there are accolades to show for it. His directional, Daddy’s Girls won the Best Drama award at the 2016 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), cementing his reputation as a masterful storyteller.
His innovative approach to behind-the-scenes filmmaking earned him Nollywood-BTS award in the Best Supporting TV Program category at the Abuja Film Festival in 2005. Beyond these accolades, his portfolio boasts household names such as Road to Stardom, Everyday People, and One Love; showcasing his versatility in drama and commercial productions.
Reflecting on Nollywood’s evolution, Afolabi acknowledged the opportunities brought by global streaming platforms like Netflix and Prime Video, which he said have validated the industry’s potential.
He, however, expressed concern over the reliance on stereotypical narratives, particularly those centered on spiritual themes, which can misrepresent Nigeria’s identity. He also points to the perceived inactivity of the National Film and Video Censors Board as a challenge.
Nonetheless, he also expresses optimism, believing that Nollywood can become a powerful nation-building tool by telling purposeful stories that inspire, educate, and attract investment. He describes filmmaking as an enriching experience that has deepened his understanding of human nature, strengthened his problem-solving skills, and introduced him to extraordinary people.
From exploring new themes and genres to embracing digital technologies and collaborating with international partners, Silver’s thoughts offer a compelling vision for Nollywood’s continued growth and global influence.
