The Pa Ayo Adebanjo-led faction of Afenifere, a prominent Yoruba sociopolitical group, has appointed lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi as its National Organising Secretary, the group announced on Tuesday, January 28, 2025.
The decision was reached during a general meeting at Adebanjo’s residence in Ogun State, according to a communiqué jointly signed by Deputy Leader Oba Oladipo Olaitan and National Publicity Secretary Prince Justice Faloye.
“The General Meeting considered and approved the appointment of Barrister Dele Farotimi as the National Organising Secretary of Afenifere,” the statement said.
Farotimi’s appointment comes just a day after Aare Afe Babalola withdrew a defamation suit against him, following several interventions from some Yoruba elders. The case stemmed from Farotimi’s book, ‘Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System’, which allegedly defamed Babalola.
Farotimi, who had been arraigned before an Ekiti State High Court and granted bail of N30 million, welcomed the appointment as a call to strengthen Afenifere’s organisational structure amid ongoing political discourse in Nigeria.
