Police crack down on unregistered vehicles, tackle rising crime in Ogun

The Ogun State Police Command has issued a public warning regarding the widespread use of unregistered vehicles, motorcycles, tricycles, and dealership plate numbers, which contravene traffic and vehicle registration laws.

In a statement released yesterday, the command revealed that a review of 2024 crime data indicated a strong connection between unregistered vehicles and violent crimes, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related killings.

According to CSP Omolola Odutola, the command’s spokesperson, offences such as driving without valid documents, using expired dealership licences, and applying artificial tints to vehicles have become increasingly common.

In response, the Commissioner of Police (CP), Lanre Ogunlowo, has directed all drivers to regularise their vehicle documents promptly.

A grace period for compliance has been announced, after which the police will adopt a zero-tolerance approach. Vehicles found operating without proper registration will be impounded, and offenders will face prosecution.

Ogunlowo stressed that the crackdown is part of broader efforts to enhance safety and curb criminal activities in the state.

He urged residents to comply with traffic laws and cooperate with law enforcement to foster a secure environment.

The command also warned that non-compliance would result in severe consequences.

In a related development, Ogunlowo expressed concern over the increasing attacks on commercial motorcyclists in the state.

Criminals posing as passengers have reportedly ambushed, attacked, and, in some cases, killed motorcyclists to steal their valuables and motorcycles.

The Commissioner advised motorcyclists to remain vigilant, avoid operating during odd hours, and refrain from carrying more than one passenger at a time to minimise risks.

The command has intensified patrols and intelligence-driven operations to address these crimes.

Ogunlowo called on motorcyclists to report suspicious activities promptly, adding that collaboration between law enforcement and the public is crucial to ensuring safety.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging all stakeholders to support efforts to enhance security in Ogun State.
