Customs seizes 1,625 parcels of cannabis, hands over to NDLEA

 

The Ogun 1 Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Idiroko, on Tuesday, handed over a total of 1,625 parcels of Cannabis Sativa intercepted by the anti-smuggling operatives of the command to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The contraband, which consisted of 780 neatly wrapped coconut-sized parcels, 225 book-sized parcels, and 160 bread-sized parcels, was handed over to the Narcotic Commander in charge of NDLEA Idiroko Special Area Command, Adeyeye Olusegun, in the spirit of inter-agency cooperation.

Additionally, the anti-smuggling operatives of the command confiscated a total of 2,002 bags of foreign parboiled rice, each weighing 50kg; 6,180 units of cutlasses; and 6,375 litres of petroleum—all within 27 days of the new year, 2025.

Speaking during the handover held at the NCS’ Century Quarters, Idiroko, Customs Area Controller for Ogun 1 Command, Comptroller Mohammed Shuaibu, said the contraband was intercepted across various cross-border routes under the command through intelligence-driven operations and the dedication of the operatives.

While rendering the year 2024 scorecard of his command, Shuaibu explained that other contrabands confiscated within the period under review included 16,712 bags of foreign parboiled rice, each weighing 50kg, and 139,881 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly referred to as petrol.

Giving the breakdown of the seizures made during the period under review, with a total Duty Payable Value (DPV) of N1,267,504,035, Shuaibu stated that other confiscated items included 940 rounds of live ammunition, 586 bales of used clothing, 85 bags of imported flour, 3,766 cartons of frozen poultry products, and 2,150 used pneumatic tyres, among others.

“These achievements are a testament to the commitment of our officers to combating smuggling activities, protecting the economy, and safeguarding the well-being of society,” he said.

While reiterating the commitment of his command to the fight against smuggling to ensure the security of the country, Shuaibu solicited the cooperation of the public in providing “timely and credible information” to assist the service in combating smuggling and other economic crimes.
