
Governor Abba Yusuf has vowed to eliminate polio in Kano State in the next four months, adding that his administration would also ensure that the high rate of maternal mortality was reduced within the period.
Declaring open an orientation training programme, organised by the Kano State Ministry of Health for its staff, 44 Local Council Chairmen and members of Kano Emirate in Kaduna at the weekend, the governor, who was represented by his deputy, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, said: “The challenge of tackling the two health issues is a task the government of Kano, under my leadership, will pursue to its logical conclusion.”
While calling on all to be serious about the exercise, he advised council officials and traditional rulers to closely monitor immunisation exercises.
Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in the state, Rahma Rahood Muhammad, explained that between 2022 and 2025, there was a steady increase in the number of polio cases.
Executive Secretary of Kano State Hospitals Management Board, Dr Mansur Mudi Nagoda, reiterated the government’s effort to reduce the rate of maternal death in the state.
ALSO, the state government has assured artisans of its commitment to improving their businesses and boosting the economy. The Commissioner for Commerce, Investment and Industry, Alhaji Shehu Wada Sagagi, pledged at the weekend during a visit to Chiromawa and Kofar Wambai markets in Kano Municipal. He said he was in the markets to promote leatherworks and traditional tannery.
His words: “I am here on the instruction of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State because during his campaign visit, he saw the number of women engaged in shoe and bag making, as well as leatherworks generally.
“I am very impressed with what I have seen. Their products are being exported to countries such as Nigeria, Cameroun, Chad, and Central Africa. This is something very interesting.”
The commissioner stressed that the government was working hard to promote the standard and quality of the products to enable acceptance by European markets.
