Nigeria to host ILO DG, labour forum

ILO Director-General, Gilbert Houngbo
Director-General of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Gilbert Houngbo, is to make a maiden visit to Nigeria during the third Annual Labour Adjudication and Arbitration Forum.

Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) Director-General, Adewale Oyerinde, disclosed this during a pre-event briefing in Abuja, yesterday, describing the upcoming event as a crucial platform for addressing key labour and industrial relations issues.

The forum, organised by NECA, will take place on February 13, bringing together employers, trade unions and government representatives to discuss labour adjudication and dispute resolution under the theme: “Labour Adjudication and Appellate Jurisdiction: Challenges and Prospects.”

Oyerinde emphasised the importance of industrial peace in driving national and regional economic growth, noting that the forum was established to fill the gap created by the National Labour Advisory Council (NLAC).

He said: “Without industrial peace, discussions about GDP growth and national development become challenging. It is akin to fighting a war within business premises. When crises arise in the workplace, productivity suffers. This is why conversations about labour, industrial relations, and industrial peace are crucial.

“As an association, we recognise the critical importance of fostering industrial harmony to drive economic growth and stability.”

Oyerinde lauded the ILO Country Director for Nigeria, Ghana, and Liberia, Dr. Vanessa Phala, for her role in facilitating the DG’s visit.
