The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has urged students not to destroy their future by indulging in drugs and substance abuse, warning that such an act mortgages the future of anyone who indulges in it.

The Oyo State Coordinator, NAFDAC, Mr Samuel Adeyemi, gave the warning during a catch-them-young programme and inauguration of the NAFDAC Consumer Safety Club (NCSC) organised for the students of Obaseeku High School, Eruwa, Oyo State.

The NAFDAC NCSC is one of the agency’s special public enlightenment strategies targeting youths in its efforts to eradicate fake and substandard products and enthrone a quality culture.

Adeyemi said the programme sensitises students on the dangers of drug and substance abuse, and its effects on them, family, the community and the nation at large.

The coordinator noted that a child who is exposed to drugs will no longer be useful, adding that in most cases, drugs, substances and crime go together.

He warned the students against bowing to the influences of their friends, urging them to stand against drug abuse and not succumb to peer pressure.

Adeyemi stated that the agency had different programmes for the students, which would ensure continuity in educating and familiarising them with the activities of NAFDAC. “We want students to be ambassadors of NAFDAC, to tell their peers and parents about our activities and enlighten others about the dangers of drug abuse,” he said.

Also speaking, the Principal of Obaseeku High School, Eruwa, Mr Hammed Muraina, promised to give all necessary support to ensure that the club become a pillar and a tool against drug and substance abuse in the community and Nigeria at large.
