MILE 2-IKORODU ROAD

.Laments N70, 000 exploitation level by enforcement officers

The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) Lagos Chapter has called for urgent intervention by Lagos authorities on the Mile12– Ikorodu road which is plagued by lack of clear lane demarcation, causing confusion among road users.

The association lamented that the situation has led to exploitation by enforcement officers in the area.

Chairman of the Lagos chapter of APWEN, Dr Atinuke Owolabi who expressed concerns during a visit to the area, lamented that many unsuspecting drivers, especially those unfamiliar with the route, mistakenly enter the BRT lane due to the absence of proper markings and signage.

Unfortunately, Owolabi said, the situation is being taken advantage of by uniformed BRT enforcement personnel, who demand ₦70,000 on the spot to avoid impounding vehicles.

“If taken to their office, drivers are issued a ₦120,000 fine. This exploitation and lack of clear road structure pose a serious concern for public safety and fairness in traffic management. As engineers, we have a professional duty to proffer solutions to societal challenges, and we urge immediate action to address this issue,” she said.

APWEN Lagos, therefore called on civil and transportation engineers, the Ministry of Transportation, and other relevant authorities to immediately implement clear lane demarcation and signage to guide road users and eliminate confusion as well as develop a structured and transparent traffic management plan to prevent further exploitation of drivers.

“This issue requires urgent attention, and we call on the authorities to ensure that the necessary road demarcations and traffic control measures are put in place before March to improve road safety and protect commuters.

We urge stakeholders, including government agencies and professional bodies, to collaborate and take swift action in the interest of the public. APWEN Lagos remains committed to advocating for safe, organised and efficient transportation systems for all,” Owolabi said.
