As Nigerians continue to make remarkable strides in various scientific fields, University of Lagos (UNILAG) alumnus Mubarak Ayinla has emerged as a rising star in international chemical research, earning global recognition for his groundbreaking work.

Ayinla, who distinguished himself at UNILAG by winning the prestigious Professor Oluwole Familoni Award for the Best Graduating Student in Organic Chemistry, is currently making waves at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, United States.
According to reports, Ayinla recently secured a coveted spot at DuPont’s prestigious research symposium, where he joined top scientists from around the world. Speaking to The Guardian, he confirmed that his presentation on dynamic materials attracted significant attention from industry leaders at the event.
In a video call from his Massachusetts laboratory, Ayinla credited his Nigerian upbringing for shaping his research approach. “Growing up in Nigeria gave me unique insights into pressing global challenges,” he said. He noted that, “When you’ve witnessed firsthand how communities struggle with water quality issues and environmental contamination, you don’t just see chemistry as an academic pursuit – you see it as a powerful tool for transformation.”
His work has not gone unnoticed in international scientific circles. It was gathered that several of his research papers have been published in high-impact journals, with one earning the distinguished “Very Important Paper (VIP)” designation from Chemistry – A European Journal. Among his contributions are advancements in self-healing materials and innovative approaches to combating drug-resistant bacteria.
Dr. Idris Olasupo of the Department of Chemistry, UNILAG, lauded Ayinla’s achievements, emphasizing that they reflect the strength of Nigeria’s education system. “His success proves that with a solid foundation, Nigerian graduates can compete at the highest levels globally,” he stated.
Ayinla’s current research on materials designed to clean up radioactive contamination has also drawn attention, with environmental experts describing it as revolutionary. “These materials have the potential to revolutionize our approach to environmental pollution,” said an Environmental Health and Compliance Specialist at the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA).
Looking ahead, Ayinla emphasized his commitment to advancing chemical research. “I want my journey to serve as an inspiration to young Nigerian scientists,” he added.
From the laboratories of UNILAG to the cutting-edge research facilities of UMass Lowell, he carries the aspirations of a nation eager to leave its mark on global scientific innovation.
