Don advocates strengthening healthcare systems to tackle risks of parasites

A Professor of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine, Oyetunde Oyeyemi, has disclosed that the war against parasites can be won through innovation and strengthening healthcare systems, as well as championing the integration of science into policy.

While emphasising that dismantling the barriers of misinformation will enhance the fight against parasites, Oyeyemi maintained that the move will eradicate neglected tropical diseases.

The don, who made this claim at the 10th Inaugural Lecture of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo State, described parasites as silent adversaries of human health.

Oyeyemi, whose inaugural lecture topic was “Webs of Affliction, Thread of Hope: Unravelling Parasites, Patterns, and Pathways to Health,” stated that parasites have long thrived in the “shadows, infiltrating lives and eluding detection.

According to him, science has been relentless in putting an end to it, stressing that through dedicated research, they have been able to decode the patterns of these parasites, understand their biology and anticipate their strategies.

He said: “With every antigen profiled, every diagnostic tool developed, and every parasite-host interaction elucidated, we move one step closer to tipping the scales in favour of human health.”

Oyeyemi called for concerted efforts from all and sundry to win the war against the affliction of parasites.
