Towards eradicating illegal developments, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has inaugurated a building contravention task force charged with monitoring contraventions and curbing activities of illegal developers across the city.

The task force, which was given a timeline, is expected to provide a complimentary role to the Department of Development Control unit.

Coordinator, Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, Felix Obuah, who spoke during the inauguration of the Task Force in Wuse District, urged members to identify ongoing developments in the respective districts and ascertain their level of compliance with the approved building plan.

He tasked the new body to analyse the extent of non-compliance, if any, and initiate enforcement actions and penalties in consonance with development control guidelines and standards.

Obuah disclosed that the task force would conduct regular monitoring of all districts and establish the level of compliance with the approved building plan.

The coordinator instructed the task force to examine and identify areas of violations and issue contravention notices in line with development control guidelines.

He advised the task force to initiate appropriate enforcement actions such as payment of contravention fees, withdrawal of approval, re-submission for consideration and approval or total removal of structures.

Obuah, who was represented by the Director of Development Control, Mukhtar Galadima, urged the task force to liaise with relevant FCTA departments and professional bodies in addressing multi-faceted cases and tap into existing private sector-driven tools in monitoring, as well as enforcement towards strengthening existing framework.

Members of the task force include Osah Gabriel Azunuka, (Chairman), Mohammed Zayyanu, Muhammad Abubakar, Jerome Ugboho, Daniel Joseph, Bello Yinka, Yusuf Godwin, Timothy Kenji, Ugochukwu Anyanwu, Godwin Alkali, Silas Agbidi, Wiki Awasak, Nzelu Nwanneka, Ibrahim Muhammed Hadi, Jamila Bello, Sadiq Ahmad, Nnadi Ike, Momoh Gabriel and Adamu Sidi Ali.
