DG advocates early conflict analysis for global peace

Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Prof Eghosa Osaghae, has emphasised the importance of conflict analysis in achieving effective preventive diplomacy.

He spoke during a three-day workshop on the “Advanced Course in Conflict Analysis and International Negotiations,” organised by the NIIA in collaboration with Peace Building Development Consult (PBDC) in Lagos.

Osaghae highlighted the multidisciplinary nature of conflict studies, explaining that conflict has long been examined across various fields such as sociology, psychology, medicine, political science, and international relations.

According to him, over time, experts in the field have recognised the need for a specialised area known as conflict studies, which now exists as a distinct academic discipline globally.

According to him, conflict is an inevitable part of human existence, as it arises wherever there are competing interests, describing conflict as the result of incompatible interests occurring at all levels of society, from interpersonal relationships to international disputes.

He stressed that while conflict might be inescapable, it was not always inevitable, as strategic interventions could prevent escalation.

Osaghae underscored the role of early warning systems in conflict prevention, drawing comparisons to environmental indicators used in disaster management, citing the example of the tsunami phenomenon, where animals fled before disaster struck, suggesting that societies could develop mechanisms to predict and address potential conflicts before they escalated into violence.

He called for proactive measures in addressing conflicts, stating that identifying early triggers and implementing effective diplomatic strategies could significantly reduce the occurrence of violent conflicts.

He urged policymakers, scholars and practitioners to integrate conflict analysis into decision-making processes to foster sustainable peace and security.
