Residents of Epe, who have been experiencing months of blackout, have started enjoying electricity as the Lagos State Government begins replacing vandalised infrastructure in a bid to restore power supply to the affected communities.

Many communities in Epe have been in the dark for over six months following the vandalisation of critical electrical infrastructure that supplies them with electricity.

This has forced many residents of the affected communities to rely on alternative power supplies, such as generating sets.

Business owners and students of Lagos State University (Epe Campus) were not spared from the incessant blackout that has plagued the communities for months.

While speaking to The Guardian on Monday, a fresh student of LASU, who pleaded anonymity, said she has never experienced power supply since she gained admission in 2024 and moved into an off-campus hostel in Iraye, a sub-community in Epe.

“Residents who have been living here before I came in said it has been over six months since they last had electricity. I have never experienced power supply since I got here,” said the student.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Lagos State Government, however, announced that the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) has replaced all vandalised portions of the Agbowa feeder.

“The Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has announced that Ikeja Electric has successfully replaced all vandalised portions of the Agbowa feeder, leading to the full restoration of power supply to the substation in Epe,” the statement read in part.

‘Electricity Has Not Been Restored to All Places in Epe’ — Resident

The Guardian learnt that electricity has not been restored to all communities in Epe, as the Lagos State Government announced.

Some sub-communities in Epe, including parts of Iraye and the LASU Epe Campus, are still in the dark.

The LASU student who spoke to The Guardian revealed this on Monday morning.

She said, “They have started restoring it, but it has not gotten to our side in Iraye. It has not reached inside LASU Epe Campus. It has gotten to some places in Epe, but not Iraye, around where the school is situated.”

The student also expressed hope that power supply will be restored to Iraye and other sub-communities in Epe where power is yet to be restored.
