March 8 holds a special significance as the world comes together to celebrate International Women’s Day, a moment dedicated to honouring the achievements of women across various sectors. Tope Mark-Odigie, a real estate coach, communication expert, business strategist, advocate, and author, reflects on the importance of this day, emphasizing its role in showcasing the resilience and success stories of women globally. As the CEO of Reb360 Ltd, a real estate development company based in Lagos, she understands firsthand the challenges women face in breaking barriers, particularly in male-dominated industries.
She highlights that International Women’s Day is not just about celebration but also about acknowledging the struggles women have endured to reach the pinnacle of success. Nigerian women, she notes, have made remarkable strides in politics, business, and various careers, serving as role models for younger generations. However, despite these achievements, gender stereotypes remain a significant issue, particularly in industries like real estate and business coaching.
With over a decade of experience in media and business coaching, Tope has witnessed positive changes in addressing gender biases, though she acknowledges there is still much room for improvement. She points out that real estate coaching, for instance, is often seen as a man’s domain, requiring women in the field to constantly prove their competence. These biases, she argues, need to be actively challenged to create a more inclusive environment.
Similarly, in media and communication, while women are widely recognized for their articulation and expressive skills, the business aspect of communication does not always acknowledge their contributions. She observes that financial deals in the industry often favor men, even when women possess equal, if not superior skills to manage them. This disparity, she explains, underscores the need for systemic change to ensure women receive the same opportunities and recognition as their male counterparts.
Reflecting on her personal journey, Tope acknowledges the role of men who have supported her growth, offering her platforms rather than seeing her as a threat. She believes that creating a culture of inclusion and mentorship is essential for breaking down gender barriers in business.
For true gender equality to be achieved, she emphasizes the need for continuous advocacy, awareness, and policy changes that promote fairness. As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, her message is clear: progress has been made, but the fight for true equality continues.
