Winners emerge in Rotary Club secondary school essay competition
To fulfil its core mandate of fostering peace in the host community, the Rotary Club, Falomo, in collaboration with a sister club, Eko Height, organised an essay competition for students of Okesuna High School in Lagos Island. Three winners emerged after a keen contest. Themed, ‘Peace Building and Conflict Prevention,’ the participants were asked to write on Peer mediation: Youth crime and social struggle.
After marking the respective essays, the organisers called each student to speak on the topic to ensure that the right people emerged as winners.
At the end of the screening exercise, Bakare Abdul Muqsit, an SS2 student who emerged as the overall winner, took home an Android tablet.
Another SS2 student, Cornelius Marvelous, came second, winning a smart wristwatch, while Sena Abigeal, also in the SS2 class, clinched the third prize—a school bag.
Elated President of the Rotary Club of Falomo, Sandra Ovie, expressed satisfaction with the participating students’ general performance. She noted that this year’s edition would serve as a precursor to better events in the future.
“The essence of this programme is to prepare these children for the future. We are here to mould their future, building their confidence and ability to speak in public.
“Two, this is to inculcate in these children the ability to be problem solvers wherever they find themselves.
“As you know, we live in a world of conflict; so we are trying to train students to mediate among their colleagues if any problem arises; instead of going to their teachers, they should be able to intervene and solve the problems.”
