Reps pass bill to establish South West Development Commission

The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a bill seeking to establish the South West Development Commission (SWDC).
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced the passage of the bill during the plenary after it was read for the third time and supported by a majority of the lawmakers.

This was after the House considered the bill clause by clause at the Committee of the Whole.
It will be transmitted to President Bola Tinubu for assent before it becomes an Act of parliament.

The bill seeks to establish the commission to manage the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Infrastructural damages, and other Developmental challenges in the region

The commission will receive and manage funds from the allocation of the Federation Account to execute infrastructural projects in the South West.

It is titled: “A Bill for an Act to Establish South West Development Commission charged with the Responsibility, among other things, to receive and manage Funds from Allocation of the Federation Account, Including Donations and Gifts for the Reconstruction and Rehabilitation of Infrastructural damages suffered in the Region and to tackle the Ecological, Environmental and other Developmental challenges in the Region and for Related Matters”

The Senate in September 2024 passed a similar bill after considering the report of its Committee on Special Duties, presented by Kaka
Shehu, its chairman.
