
President Bola Tinubu has tasked the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), Effurun, Delta State, with developing sustainable and innovative research that would help drive his administration’s promised economic prosperity by creating opportunities.
Tinubu, who is the Visitor to the university, spoke during the 4th convocation of the university. He said specialised institutions such as FUPRE are critical to the oil sector and Nigeria’s economic growth.
Represented by the Vice Chancellor of the Nigeria Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta State, Prof. Emmanuel Adigio, the president also harped on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its potential to drive development and growth and urged the graduates to deploy AI to upgrade their skills and acquire new ones.
The president said, “With Nigeria’s vast resources, institutions like FUPRE are critical to our economic growth. The role of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, in energy research and innovation should align with the goals of my administration in driving economic prosperity and creating opportunities for all. By partnering with the government and industry, the university can be a key player in providing sustainable energy solutions for the nation.
“As a government, we are committed to supporting the growth of this university, particularly in securing opportunities to help fulfill its mandate and lead in the energy sector. However, this is a shared responsibility, as I call on industry leaders, stakeholders, and Nigerians to partner with us in empowering FUPRE to become a global hub for energy education and innovation. Your support through funding, internships, expertise, or industry partnerships is crucial. Together, we can equip graduates with the skills needed for the evolving energy sector and contribute to Nigeria’s sustainable future.
“To the leadership of FUPRE, I charge you to lead in advancing sustainable energy research and innovation. You have a responsibility to equip the next generation with the expertise needed to manage Nigeria’s energy future as indigenous companies take the lead in this era.
“Our graduands of today should note that Nigeria and Africa are looking up to the youth to lead the transformation of our societies. You are the engineers, scientists, and innovators who will develop sustainable energy solutions, create industries, and address global challenges. While the oil and gas sector remains central to our economy, the future lies in renewable energy, and Nigeria must be at the forefront of this transition. I urge you to embrace innovation, adaptability, and new technologies. I will also encourage you to take Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a credible way to improve life skills and achieve greater heights. I challenge you to apply your knowledge and skills in practical ways, build a strong foundation for your future, and contribute positively to society.

“This administration is committed to ensuring that every Nigerian student has access to quality education. Our initiatives, like the Students’ Loan Scheme, the National Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship Program, and expanded scholarships, are aimed at equipping the youth with the skills needed to shape the future. Through these efforts, we are empowering the next generation to thrive.”
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of FUPRE, Prof. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, disclosed that a total of 3,369 students graduated, including 2,683 undergraduates and 686 postgraduates, with 51 earning First-Class Honours.
He added that six individuals received honorary degrees for their outstanding contributions.
