The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has stressed the importance of the private sector’s participation, emphasising that the government alone cannot fully develop the sector.
The Managing Director of NIWA, Bola Oyebamiji, stated this during a familiarisation visit by the newly appointed Board Chairman of the Authority, Musa Sarkin-Adar, at NIWA’s liaison office in Abuja.
Oyebamiji commended the dedication and expertise of his management team in advancing inland waterway transportation in Nigeria. He acknowledged his team’s contributions, stating that their collective efforts have been instrumental in driving progress within the sector.
“I am fortunate to work with a highly experienced and committed management team. Whatever achievements we record result from our collective dedication, and I cannot take the credit alone,” Oyebamiji said.
In his response, Sarkin-Adar expressed appreciation for the warm reception and urged the authorities to intensify efforts to expand water transportation across more states.
The chairman called for the gradual phasing out of wooden boats to enhance safety and reduce waterway accidents. He encouraged the MD and his team to remain focused on building a lasting legacy that will be remembered for years.
