My Background: A Journey to the Helm of Ashipa Electric
I spent most of my childhood within a 60-mile radius of Lagos Island. The farthest I had travelled then was to Ijebu Ishiwo, near Ijebu-Ode/Epe, where I visited annually during festive periods. These events remain some of my fondest childhood memories.

Juxtaposing my experience between Lagos and Ijebu Ishiwo had a great impact on my childhood. In both areas, I experienced first-hand the impact of limited access to electricity. As a kid, it seemed fun whenever I experienced a power outage because it was a perfect excuse to play and camp outside with friends and family especially in the countryside in Ijebu. And when the electricity was restored, the jubilation was immense with everyone screaming “UP NEPA! UP NEPA!”; NEPA is an acronym for the Nigerian Electric Power Authority, the government organization that managed the electric power infrastructure before the privatization of the sector. At a later time, when I had to study using lanterns or candlelight, and later a generator, at night in Lagos, I grew more uncomfortable with the frequent electricity outages. Listening to adults then, the sharp contrast between Nigeria’s epileptic power and the steady power supply in other countries was concerning, awakening my curiosity and desire to be a part of the solution.

My dedication was so laser-focused, that almost every research work I did, was about my desire to support universal electrification in Nigeria. I went on to study electrical engineering at Louisiana State University [LSU] in Louisiana and subsequently honed my technical skills in electrical power systems within the oil and gas sector. Given that I had a clear overarching objective, I periodically assessed my progress and re-calibrated it. To ensure I matched my technical abilities with strategic leadership, I enrolled for an MBA at Tepper School of Business in Pennsylvania. At this time, the power sector in Nigeria was being privatized and opportunities for smaller companies to participate were opening. So, I jumped right in during my MBA program in late 2014 and founded Ashipa Electric.

Mike Tyson once said, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.” and that was exactly my story in the early years of Ashipa Electric. My team and I secured interest from many clients, however the power sector policy landscape at that time was not favourable. Imagine a scenario where a cluster of underserved prospects could not disconnect from the grid and be powered by the more reliable solution we offered, even though the grid was unreliable. To make matters worse, the naira to dollar exchange rate increased by 300%, rendering our initial investments almost worthless. At this point, there was a need to restructure, so, I returned to the United States to work at a major Utility company where I further honed my skills in the technical and commercial management of large-scale renewable energy projects.

Thanks largely to the Rural Electrification Agency, The World Bank, The Africa Development Bank, The Nigerian Electrification Regulatory Commission, The Federal Government of Nigeria, and several other organizations, the policy landscape began to liberalize in 2016, and this happened so fast that in 2020, I decided to re-embark on my journey but this time with a global scope. With the support of Techstars, Alabama Power, Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator, Cleantech Open Northeast, Ajayi Solutions, and an amazing team, we revived Ashipa Electric with a focus on rural development through community mini-grid systems. Today, with a dedicated and talented team, we have installed and are already operating projects in several states across Nigeria; we have also developed a strong pipeline of projects not just in Nigeria, but across Africa and the Americas.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the patience and support of my amazing family, especially my wife, Nafisa Ajala.

Nigeria’s electric power sector faces significant infrastructure and financial challenges. At the generation level, inadequate gas infrastructure leaves power plants underutilized. Additionally, insufficient investment in transmission and distribution creates bottlenecks, restricting power delivery to less than half of the total generation capacity. Compounding these issues, metering deficits and widespread energy theft limit the ability of distribution companies to collect revenue, leading to losses. As a result, 40% of the population lacks access to the distribution grid, while the 60% who are connected still face frequent outages. This forces many to rely on costly, noisy, and polluting diesel or petrol generators. Ashipa Electric is committed to addressing these challenges by providing smart, sustainable, decentralized energy solutions.

For many years, the regulatory policy landscape limited the private sector’s intervention; however, creative solutions by the Rural Electrification Agency, Nigerian Electric Regulatory Commission, and the full and continuing support of multiple government administrations have now created an environment where the distribution companies are now privatized, are investing more in metering and distribution infrastructure, and working closely with mini-grid developers on the path to universal electrification. Even at this stage, there are more issues such as access to capital, high cost of capital due to inflation, exposure to foreign exchange fluctuations due to heavy dependence on imported equipment, some regulatory uncertainties, consumer purchasing power, and many more.
