Rotary gives free surgery to 70 patients

The Rotary Club of Festac Town in conjunction with Rotary Clubs of Greenfield Estate Festac Town, Festac Metropolitan, Rotary Club of Amuwo, Festac Central, Satellite Town, and Lagos West has given free medical treatments to some patients within and outside Lagos State.

Speaking during the programme, the President of Rotary Club of Festac Town, Rotarian Demola Martins, said the project is a medical outreach.

“What we do is to bring together patients within our community to give them some form of medical operation in four areas.”

The clubs came together last year to start the medical outreach and because of the testimonies we had we decided to do the second edition.

“We are performing medical operations in four areas of diagnosed medical conditions – Herniotomy, Lumpectomy, Herniorrhaphy, and Myomectomy removal of fibroids. All these clubs have come together without government funding. We put together our individual funds to make it happen. The whole essence of Rotary is service to humanity. It profits to serve. There is always joy in our hearts when we give.”

He said that so far they have operated on 20 patients out of the 70 patients they are going to operate on for this particular Rotary year.

“The AMC Medical Centre is one of the best within Amuwo Odofin. When we wanted to start this project we discovered that it would cost millions of naira but this hospital has partnered with us to collect as little as nothing. This hospital accommodated us last year and the medical director had also given his consent that we can also come next year. They only asked us to buy our drugs and we brought in doctors outside the hospital. The hospital has 19 beds and they gave us all the beds without collecting anything from us. We publicised it through flyers and social media. We don’t know most of the patients before; some came as far as Ota. The takeaway is that there is joy in heaven over this project,” he added.

According to Rotarian Abiola Ektson from Rotary Club of Festac Town, one of the women who benefited from the surgery last year has given birth to a baby boy.

Chair, Women in Rotary, District 9111, Rotarian Lara Akinsanya, said the patients would soon be discharged to give room for other patients to be operated on.

“Once you are okay, no complications, we are going to discharge you so that we can admit the new ones,” she said.

The District Governor, District 9111, Rotarian Wole Kukoyi, called on the government, well meaning Nigerians and philanthropic organisations to support Rotary’s humanitarian initiatives, stressing that such partnerships were crucial in making life easier and more meaningful for the less privileged in the society.
