The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has condemned the recent mob killing of 16 travellers in Uromi, Edo State, calling it a “barbaric act.”
Abbas, in a statement he wrote on X on Sunday, said that such mob violence should be unacceptable in society, noting that no one should be falsely accused, brutalised, or murdered in cold blood.
The speaker also called on security agencies to act swiftly in line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
He tweeted, “I am deeply saddened and outraged by the horrific killing of 16 innocent travellers in Uromi, Edo State. This barbaric act of mob violence is unacceptable in our society.
“No one should be falsely accused, brutalized, or murdered in cold blood. I call on security agencies to act swiftly, as directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to bring those responsible to justice.
“At a time when we observe Ramadan and Lent—seasons of reflection and compassion—such cruelty reminds us of the urgent need to uphold the sanctity of human life.
“Nigerians, regardless of tribe or faith, must be able to move freely in their own country without fear. I urge calm and restraint as investigations continue.
“My heartfelt condolences go to the families of the victims. Justice must and will prevail.”
