From Njadvara Musa, Damaturu
About five people have been reportedly killed when a bus driver rammed into pedestrians at Ngelzarma village market along the Damaturu-Potiskum road in Yobe State.
The Guardian gathered that 19 pedestrians attending the weekly village market beside the highway also suffered injuries in the Monday crash.
Confirming the development in Damaturu yesterday, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Livinus Longzen Yilzoom, attributed the cause of the crash to speeding.
According to him, the driver lost control of the vehicle as a result, killing five passengers and injuring 19 others.
He said the market, which is held every Monday, attracts many villagers who buy and sell agricultural products and livestock.
The Sector Commander said, “Our rescue team has evacuated the bodies and the injured persons to the Yobe State Teaching Hospital (YSUTH) for deposition and treatment in the early hours of Tuesday.”
Yilzoom urged family members to first identify the bodies at the mortuary before releasing them for burial.
He also urged motorists to always adhere to all the traffic rules and regulations, including speed limits and other traffic signs at each town along the roads and other highways across the country.
