Obi donates N7.5m to Plateau IDPs as Benue blocks visit

Amid the heartbreak and ruins left by recent violent attacks in the Bokkos council area of Plateau State, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, arrived in the state with a message of empathy, unity, and urgent action.

Travelling from Abuja to Jos, deep into the affected communities of Bokkos, the politician walked among grieving families, displaced children, and shattered homes – listening, comforting, and standing in solidarity with those left behind by the tragic events.

He wrote on his X handle: “What has happened here is heartbreaking and utterly unacceptable.”Consequently, Obi donated N7.5 million to support the welfare and continued education of the displaced children. He said his gesture was a small but crucial step towards healing and rebuilding.

Standing with Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Obi expressed deep condolences and emphasised the need for leadership built on justice, empathy, and decisive action.
THIS comes as Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, distanced himself and his administration from the purported visit of Obi to the state.

There have been speculations that Obi, who regularly visited Benue during the tenure of former Governor Samuel Ortom, was being expected in Makurdi, the state capital, yesterday.

It was also touted that the Anambra State ex-governor was to visit the Tiv paramount ruler, HRM Tor Tiv, Prof. James Iorzua Ayatse, in Gboko, as well as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at Abagena, Udei in Guma Local Council of the state.

However, in a statement released yesterday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Kulas Tersoo, the state government clarified that it was not involved in or connected to the visit.

The statement reads: “The Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, wishes to inform the public that he is not expecting any August visitor today (yesterday).”

“He is currently engaged in high-profile meetings with key state actors to discuss critical issues affecting our state.

“Therefore, he strongly advises against any group or high-profile individual(s) attempting to enter the state for any kind of visit that may generate political assemblies without prior approval.

“For anyone considering a visit to Benue State without the Governor’s knowledge, it is imperative to reconsider such plans, as the safety and security of individuals in this regard cannot be guaranteed.

“Also, the public is to note that all individuals or groups intending to visit IDPs in Benue State must first seek and obtain written permission from Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA).
