The Arewa Youth Council has issued a sharp rebuke of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, dismissing his continued political offensives against President Bola Tinubu as driven by frustration and a desire to reclaim lost political ground.
In a statement released in Kaduna on Thursday, the Council’s president, Adams Reuben, described Atiku’s recent coalition campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections as a gathering of “political figures seeking renewed relevance.”
Mr Reuben accused the former vice president of attempting to rewrite history by presenting himself as a reform-minded statesman, while allegedly failing to account for decisions made during his tenure from 1999 to 2007 under President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.
“How does someone involved in privatisation policies that many Nigerians feel adversely impacted the economy now turn around to criticise efforts aimed at reform and recovery?” Mr Reuben questioned, referring to the transfer of key public assets during Atiku’s time in office.
The Arewa Youth Council took particular aim at the proposed coalition being championed by the former vice president, calling it a political manoeuvre unlikely to resonate with Nigerians. “This so-called coalition is merely an alliance of individuals trying to restore their political relevance,” Mr Reuben claimed.
The group further argued that while Atiku has consistently contested for the presidency over the past decades, President Tinubu succeeded in his first attempt, attributing this to what it described as “a mandate of trust from the electorate.”
“It is time for Atiku to move on,” the Council noted. “Continual attacks on the president will not erase the realities of past administrations or shift public opinion.”
The Arewa Youth Council concluded by stating it would continue to voice its stance against what it sees as attempts to sow discord and reframe past political legacies for present gain.
