Stakeholders laud Francis Yakubu’s Impact on early childhood education

Amid ongoing calls for innovative and inclusive education systems across the globe, stakeholders in the education sector have commended Francis Yakubu, a Nigerian-born expert in early childhood education, for his pioneering work in transforming learning outcomes for young children.

Speaking on the sidelines of the yearly conference of Early Childhood Association of Nigeria, (ECAN) held in Lagos from 25th – 29th August, 2024 which he participated virtually. Several education leaders highlighted Yakubu’s contributions to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) integration, teacher training, and curriculum innovation as instrumental in shaping the future of early learning.

According to Yakubu, “Education must be meaningful and accessible from the very beginning. My research is about helping teachers become facilitators of creativity, inquiry, and lifelong curiosity.”

For over a decade, Francis Yakubu has been at the forefront of early childhood education, developing innovative teaching methods and training future educators to elevate learning experiences for the youngest learners. From rural classrooms in Nigeria to research institutions in the United States, his work bridges continents and transforms communities.

Yakubu began his career as a government subject teacher during Nigeria’s compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). “It was in that modest classroom that I first understood the power of early educational intervention,” he recalls. That formative experience ignited a passion that led him to pursue a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education at the University of Ibadan in 2015, where he deepened his focus on how foundational education influences lifelong academic performance.

Today, Yakubu is recognized internationally for his research and practice in early childhood and STEM education. As a doctoral researcher at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, he is reshaping how educators approach learning in the early years by promoting creative and culturally responsive teaching strategies within STEAM curricula.

In Nigeria, Yakubu played a pivotal role in teacher development. At the National Teachers’ Institute Kaduna, he served as a facilitator, teaching critical courses like Theories and Practice of Early Childhood Education and Teaching Social Studies in Primary Schools. He also authored a key course module titled Qualitative Research Techniques and Methods in Early Childhood Education, which has benefited hundreds of future educators nationwide.

Now in the U.S., he works as a research assistant in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Alabama. His current focus includes instructional design, equity in education, and empirical studies on STEAM integration at the early childhood and elementary levels. His positivist, data-driven approach has yielded several peer-reviewed publications and presentations at international academic conferences.

One of his most influential works, Self-efficacy as correlates of pupils academic achievement in mathematics. The study underscores how pupils confidence directly affects their mathematics achievements.

In addition to STEM research, Yakubu is known for his advocacy of culturally responsive pedagogy. His work provides vital insights into adapting teaching strategies to reflect the cultural contexts of learners—an approach that enhances both engagement and outcomes.

Stakeholders continue to applaud his efforts to bridge the gap between theory and practice. His collaborative research with faculty, government agencies, and NGOs across Nigeria and the U.S. centers on curriculum development projects that prioritize innovation, inclusivity, and educational equity.

With over 12 years of hands-on experience and academic leadership, Francis Yakubu is seen as a visionary educator helping shape both national education policies and international pedagogical trends. As he continues to advance STEAM integration and lead transformative teacher training efforts, his mission remains clear: to ensure that every child, regardless of background, receives the best possible start in life.
