Portal to solve data collection, management problems in agric sector

In an effort to solve agricultural challenges in Nigria, Alluvial Agriculture Limited launched the Alluvial Agriculture Portal—GAP, a unified digital solution designed to elevate agricultural extension services and empower farmers across Nigeria.

The portal’s comprehensive capabilities transform how data is collected, managed, and analyzed by extension agents, enabling seamless farmer registration, field activity logging, inventory monitoring, and harvest tracking. By consolidating these critical functions into a single offline-capable platform, GAP eliminates the inefficiencies and inaccuracies of traditional paper-based methods, fostering a new era of data-driven agriculture in regions that have long been underserved by digital infrastructure.

Chimezirim Bassey, who led the portal’s development, explained that the team prioritised an architecture that would function reliably in low-connectivity environments. “Our goal was to ensure that no agent is ever forced to choose between capturing data and waiting for a signal,” he said. “GAP’s offline mode, combined with robust synchronization protocols, guarantees that every input, whether it’s a farmer’s planting date or inventory count, is preserved and integrated into our central database as soon as connectivity returns”.

Managing Director, Alluvial, Dimieari Von Kemedi, emphasised the strategic importance of GAP for addressing systemic challenges in agricultural management. “For too long, extension agents have been overwhelmed by paperwork and fragmented data systems,” he noted. “GAP streamlines these processes, enabling agents to devote more time to on-the-ground support and farmer engagement, which is critical for boosting productivity and ensuring food security”.

Early adopters of the portal have already reported significant gains: agents in pilot regions achieved an 89% improvement in task completion efficiency, while farmer satisfaction scores rose by 25% due to clearer communication and timely interventions. These results underscore the portal’s capacity to reduce operational bottlenecks and enhance the overall extension experience for both agents and farmers.

A farmer, Aliyu Ahmed, who attended the launch and participated in the Adamawa training session, highlighted how GAP has changed his interaction with extension services. “Before, I relied on paper forms that often got lost or were incomplete,” he said. “Now, my agent uses GAP to record every detail on a tablet, and I get immediate feedback on my crop management. It’s like having a digital assistant in the field with me”. This illustrates how the portal not only improves data accuracy but also builds trust and transparency between farmers and service providers.

Beyond its immediate operational benefits, GAP’s centralised data repository enables Alluvial to perform advanced analytics on crop performance, input utilization, and regional trends. These insights inform strategic decisions—such as targeted training programs and resource allocation that further enhance the resilience and productivity of farming communities. By integrating machine-learning models and predictive analytics in future releases, Alluvial plans to offer proactive recommendations on planting schedules, pest control, and market pricing, thereby transforming GAP from a record-keeping tool into a comprehensive decision-support system
