A former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has said that only the electorate should decide if a politician should defect or remain in a political party.
Dalung aired his stance on defection while speaking to Channels Television on Tuesday morning.
The former minister, who spoke extensively on the mass defection that has rocked the People’s Democratic Party, as lawmakers, governors and other politicians bid the party goodbye and seek refuge under the umbrella of the All Progressives Congress (APC), attributed it to the politicians’ quest for prosecution evasion and survival.
Some politicians who were being probed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) evaded prosecution when they joined the APC. Some of them include Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Orji Uzor Kalu, Stella Oduah, among others.
“The wave of defections or the gale of defections of the political elites who are repositioning themselves either for survival, protection, or evasion of prosecution cannot be taken seriously by students of Nigerian politics,” said Dalung.
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, recently joined the bandwagon of defecting politicians. According to Dalung, Oborevwori’s defection is not in the best interest of Delta State.
