Towards strengthening the foundation of marriages in the face of economic hardship, the CEO of Froyal Amity Academy, Dr. Rashidat Adetoun Olaniyan, has urged government to consider the basic needs of citizens when formulating economic policies. Doing so, she counselled, would save many marriages that are currently undergoing turbulent situation.
Dr. Olaniyan made this submission during the Academy Marital Summit (2.0), themed ‘Financial Harmony: Strengthening Marital Bonds through Financial Planning.’
She noted that financial harmony and open communication can fortify marital bonds.
“No matter the policy government are making, they should consider the basic needs of citizens because as of today not everybody can afford their basic needs.
“If citizens are able to get their basic needs, food, shelter and clothing, they will not fall victims of scams. The citizens should also live within their means, as the current economic climate serves as a reality check for those living beyond their true financial capacity.”
She reiterated the organization’s commitment to addressing relevant societal issues. “The summit aimed to equip couples and singles with strategies for achieving financial peace instead of money fights, we have come to realized that the economic situation is one thing that is breaking homes and marriages.”
She identified communication breakdown, often rooted in financial or intimacy issues, as a major cause of marital strife and the key solution is self-awareness.
“Finance is one major thing that is breaking marriages, apart from intimacy. when there is finance, intimacy will come freely. Understanding each partner’s financial personality, whether spender or saver is crucial in preventing clashes.”
Dr. Olaniyan stressed the importance of financial planning and open discussions about financial goals and values in the home.
“If couples don’t have plans or a budget, they will be having clashes. Their personal goals and values for money should be discussed extensively,” she advised.
Addressing the role of women in the workforce, Dr. Olaniyan advocated for a balanced approach, referencing the Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) wife, Khadijah, as an example of a working woman. She cautioned women to ensure their work does not negatively impact their homes or lead to arrogance, emphasizing the need for couples to discuss and prioritize family responsibilities.
The Chief Imam of Light House Lekki, Imam Nojeem Jimoh, lauded the organizers’ efforts in addressing crucial societal issues and emphasized the significance of finance in marital stability, especially for young couples. He also highlighted the importance of effective communication. Regarding the Islamic perspective on polygyny, Imam Jimoh clarified that while permissible, it is not for everyone and requires careful consideration and readiness.
A Medical Laboratory Scientist and Nutrition Coach, Mariam Sholate Eshinlokun described the seminar as insightful and worthwhile, emphasizing the value of continuous learning and counselling for couples, even those with long-standing marriages. She encouraged couples to prioritize counselling to navigate challenges and gain new perspectives.
