The Edo State Police Command has arrested 95 suspected cultists and recovered firearms and ammunition during a week-long operation aimed at curbing cult-related violence in Benin City and its environs.
The operation followed a surge in crime and criminality linked to cult activities in the state. The command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Yamu, disclosed this in a statement yesterday, revealing that 64 of the suspects have been charged to court and remanded in custody, while investigations are ongoing for the remaining cases.
Yamu stated that operatives seized two locally made pistols, a single-barrel shotgun, and 24 live cartridges during intelligence-led raids. He identified the suspects as alleged members of the Maphites, Eiye, and Aye confraternities, accusing them of involvement in recent cult supremacy killings in Edo State.
The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, warned youths against joining secret societies and urged parents to closely monitor their children’s activities.
“These groups destroy futures and end lives, both of members and innocent citizens,” Agbonika said.He reassured residents of the command’s commitment to dismantling cult networks and restoring public safety in the state.
