Plateau killings: Police arrest more suspects, recover illegal arms in fresh raids

Group calls for revival of local security outfit
The Nigeria Police Force has announced the arrest of three additional suspects connected to the recent wave of killings in Plateau State, as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks in the region.

According to a statement, yesterday, signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) carried out a series of successful operations targeting gunrunners and criminal conspirators in the state.

The statement revealed that on May 3, 2025, at about 4:30 p.m., IRT operatives, acting on credible intelligence, apprehended one Abubakar Jibrin from Kalone Community in Shendam Local Council.

He was found in unlawful possession of prohibited firearms. Following his arrest, Jibrin confessed to the location of an SMG rifle with an empty magazine hidden in his residence. In a related operation the following day, May 4, 2025, police operatives recovered two fabricated revolver rifles during a sweep in Barkin Ladi.

The firearms were traced to ammunition linked to a suspect identified as Ismail Danjuma, who is now in custody and assisting investigators.

“These recent operations demonstrate the commitment of the police to diligently ensure every person complicit in these condemnable killings is brought to justice and made to face the full wrath of the law,” the statement read.

MEANWHILE, after a studied silence over the lingering cycle of terror attacks, frequent kidnapping, isolated attacks, genocidal massacre of innocent natives in Bokkos, Mangu, Bassa, Barkin Ladi and other parts of Plateau State, the leadership of the Bokkos Cultural Development Council (BCDC) has condemned tactical and deliberate execution of ethnic cleansing and land grabbing by criminal gangs and terrorists.

According to the group, the forceful displacement of law-abiding natives was by terrorists suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.

Addressing a press briefing yesterday in Bokkos, the Chairman of the group, Mabas Ayuba Isa, said that the coordinated terrorists are selective in their attacks as they only target the natives of the local council and the indigenous people of Plateau State.

According to Isa, the attackers usually spare the Fulani and their cattle each time they attack the communities. He regretted that it has become so difficult for the government and security agencies to leverage on intelligence to forestall the scourge.

“What does it take the security agencies to comb the criminal hide-outs (bushes and mountains) to identify, apprehend, disarm and prosecute these terrorists who attack our innocent and law-abiding citizens, killing them in cold blood and destroying their farms and livelihood?

“Why has the long arm of the law not caught up with them over the years?

The BCDC is, therefore, calling on Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang to reactivate the security outfit in the state, “Operation Rainbow,” the existing auxiliary security apparatus, to recruit some of the reliable naïve youths who are willing to sacrifice the last drop of their blood in defence of their heritage and provide them with licensed arms to carry out their operations.
