Experts canvass mental health awareness to improve disability

Experts have called for stronger support systems, inclusive policies, and mental awareness to improve the lives of persons with disabilities. The family forum organised by the Resource Centre for the Blind (RCB) in Ikeja, Lagos, had over 80 participants, including clusters of disabilities.

Executive Director of RCB, Mrs Temitayo Ayinla-Omotola, said the event was created to celebrate resilience and change negative narratives about disability. “Disability does not define destiny. Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive.

“Our goal is to ensure families are not left isolated. With the right education, emotional support, and access to services, parents can raise empowered children who contribute positively to society,” Ayinla-Omotola said.

Visually impaired entrepreneur, Dolapo Agbede, emphasised dignity, work ethics, and employment access. “People with disabilities deserve inclusion in national development plans,” she said.

Medical Director at D.F.O Hospital, Dr Francis Okugwu, advised medical testing before marriage to prevent hereditary conditions and called for more mental health education.

He also called on government bodies, faith-based organisations, and the private sector to invest in long-term inclusion strategies, stressing the importance of early intervention, accessible learning tools, and skill development for persons with disabilities.

Participants like Aminu Mustapha, a student whose 12-year-old brother is blind, praised the event. “This has provided valuable knowledge that will lead to better mental health outcomes and stronger self-worth,” he said.

Another, Mr Frank Ezeh, praised the event for its impact on mental health and networking opportunities. Moderator and founder of Eagles Voice International for Rights, Kemi Odusanya, described the forum as “educative, empowering, and transformational.” She encouraged participants to embrace self-care and contribute to national growth.

Representatives from Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) and Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) reaffirmed their commitment to championing the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.
