200 golfers compete in Captain Day tournament in Delta

No fewer than 200 golfers are participating in the much-celebrated Captain Day Golf tournament holding at Ibori Golf and Country Club in Asaba, Delta State.

The three-day tournament teed off on Thursday in Asaba, the state capital, with 14 professional golfers, all from Asaba, Sapele, Ibadan, Enugu, and Benin City.

Head of Resident Professional Golfer, Francis Isuku, who disclosed this to newsmen, said about 20 professional golfers were invited to the tournament, but only 14 of them showed interest, and they are on the ground participating.

“We are having 14 professional golfers playing. Three of them are based in Asaba, one each from Sapele, Ibadan, Enugu, Benin Club, and the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) in Benin City.”

“The professional golfers invited to play and celebrate with the Captain include Chukwudi Okoro, Lucky Idehen, and one-time Africa champion Victor Enagbe,” he said.

According to Isuku, the Captain Day Golf Tournament is to celebrate the Director General of Asaba Capital Development Territory, Patrick Ukah, who is the current Captain of Ibori Golf and Country Club, for showing commitment to sustaining the tempo of golfing in the state.

He explained that the tournament features male and female group players, and the reason for the group play is to create space to have enough field and avoid shocks for the 200 registered members participating in the tournament.

“To the tournament,” he added, “is to broaden golf by showcasing to the people that golfing is good for our health.”
